TL;DR
The Bible warns of a powerful deceiver who will arise in the last days. Learn what Scripture says about the Antichrist and how to recognize deception.
The term 'Antichrist' appears in the letters of John, where he writes, 'Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come' (1 John 2:18). John describes both a specific future figure and a spirit of antichrist that has operated throughout history.
The apostle Paul refers to this figure as 'the man of lawlessness' in 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4: 'Don't let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped.'
In Revelation 13, the Antichrist is symbolized as 'the beast' who rises from the sea. He is given authority by the dragon (Satan) and exercises power for 42 months. He demands worship, persecutes believers, and deceives the world through signs and wonders performed by a second beast — the false prophet.
One of the most chilling aspects of the Antichrist is his deceptive nature. He won't appear obviously evil — he will present himself as a savior, a unifier, a problem-solver. 2 Corinthians 11:14 warns that 'Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.' The Antichrist will offer counterfeit peace and solutions that lead to destruction.
The mark of the beast (Revelation 13:16-17) is associated with the Antichrist's economic control: 'It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark.' This represents total allegiance to the beast's system.
Despite his terrifying power, the Antichrist's reign is temporary. Paul assures believers that 'the Lord Jesus will overthrow [him] with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming' (2 Thessalonians 2:8). His defeat is absolute and final.
The warning about the Antichrist is ultimately a call to discernment. Test every teaching against Scripture. Don't follow charismatic leaders blindly. Stay rooted in the true Christ so that no counterfeit can deceive you. As John wrote, 'Test the spirits to see whether they are from God' (1 John 4:1).
